Hi, Lucid is much better compared with Karmic. I understand that you have trouble with the new gnome desktop themes but they can be customized. Please install Compiz and see a difference. If you need some more you can open package manager and install kde desktop.
You will get disappointed with Karmic since the Grub2 in Karmic has serious issues. I lost my partition on Karmic and had to use systemrescue disk to recompile the kernel. Be careful with whatever you do.
