Install firewall and deny incoming traffic. If you wish to go little further, get zenmap (gui for nmap) and scan your ports. I am not sure on your level of expertise and interpretation of data post zenmap. If you wish to go beyond this and whack the dog, install snort. IMHO firewall should be sufficient for you. Ubuntu doesnt come with operating SSH or anything like that and since you are asking this question I guess you have not activated it either.
