I'm also using the same version of Gimp, and I'm having only 512Mb
ram. So I use JWM, instead of GNOME, when I use GIMP.

If the image size is too high, or if there are too many layers this
may happen(i.e.) just because of out of resources. I used to get a
warning message in such cases. Did you see any kind of this message?

I'm not sure. Try to start GIMP from terminal. So that you might see
the error message in terminal.

Better stick on to the latest version, if you are not sure it is a bug
and as long as the application is not critical.
