If you looking for shell access (command line) follow Arjun's advice ,
If you want to try out desktop version, download ubuntu iso to a CD/
DVD/USB drive and boot from the device. You can actually play around
without changing the software you have on your computer

Also you can try a limited options demo here of a linux desktop
