If you are planning to host websites / test websites .. I would go for Centos/RHEL as it is the most stable LAMP installation. If you come across issues , there is lot more support available online for centos/ redhat based installation. Freebsd is also great.
Manual installation gives you a lot of flexibility, experience and knowledge of how they all slot in and work.
