video chat in empathy works fine as long as your webcam is detected by your distro. however if u are behind institutional networks that block IM clients(i happens to be one such unlucky guys) empathy/pidgin wont be any help to you. the only possible solution is the web based video chat services like the gmail. and i am happy that i now have an option of using it in linux as well. :-)
