I have already done a post in the ilug website. Think its not
updating now, so made up my mind to post to ilug gmail group.
Well whats your opinion about the open free movement in Mobile
computing. Mobile phone has phenomenal penetration among the mass. And
we will have more non techie people using it. That may be the reason why
Android and iPhone are fast growing. Luckily Mobile computing has got
some truly open flavours. Nokia Intel Initiative Meego.
Android which is a modified Java VM that allow's only app's developed
for android to run on it.Thus restricting interoperability. This makes
all the app's developed to stick only with Google. Thus they are
indirectly doing what iphone is doing..
But maemo and Meego are fully open..You use Qt or any language like
python..anything. compile it run it in os. if the os has installed
compiler it will run :). more over its just like linux..you have root
access. you can do apt-get to install new packages..dual boot with other
mobile os..and list goes on ;)
So what i propose is why not we make some app's that could be useful for
trivandrum..European Open source communities have many such initiatives
and they have number of services like - apps which update the local bus
timings, apps which assist in shopping - all these are purely based on
local information.
So why can't we have this for our city- trivandrum. I feel the amount of
effort would be much smaller..and reach more wider since we are catering
to mobile community.. And lets make this Open and Free..
We can develop apps for Maemo/Meego apps, may be android apps, widgets
like screenlets,plasmoid,desklets so that our apps can be viewed from
desktop also.
This will fuel the social desktop concept where your desktop is
controlled through widget and is social enabled... So in short we can
bring a set of apps small, useful and beautiful which runs in your
desktop and mobile phones..which gives you local information about our
city..
Well this is just a framework idea..I invite people to bring in more
ideas..We would need techie and non techie volunteers..For non techies
lets find trainings..And lets promote this in collages and schools - It
isnt much harder to write an app that displays the timing of a bus by
quering from a service in net..
If such a movement is already thr..let us know ..so that we could
collaborate and provide the momentum..But once again let this be Open
and Free..Let it be a serive to our city :))
