FreeBSD, OpenBSD, NetBSD and Solaris are by far the best when it comes to kernel performance. Linux kernel is basically mad patch work. I am now working on building a custom OS with OpenBSD kernel and Debian userland. I got nvidia driver in FreeBSD (195,..), FreeBSD needs some work with audio drivers. I prefer building kde/plasma with ruby instead of python.
