As you correctly surmised, the VGA port on the back of your laptop is for video OUT from the laptop, not video IN to the laptop. The only way for your LCD screen to get input is from the laptop itself.

If you have network cards in both the laptop and the desktop, you could connect the two directly with a network crossover cable. Then, if your desktop is running XP, you could have your laptop make a Remote connection your desktop.
