You can write in Unicode and then convert to ASCII. Check http://silpa.org.in/ASCII2Unicode . It has a Unicode to ASCII converter and Karthika is supported in it. Type up your text in gEdit, copy paste it to the silpa link i posted above. You should be able to paste the results back into a Libreoffice document. I haven't tried it, but its worth looking into.
