This may be a silly query, but I really need a clarification.
I had a doubt to be cleared, whether the MNREGS-MIS ( മഹാത്മാഗാന്ധി
ദേശീയ ഗ്രാമീണ തൊഴിലുറപ്പു പദ്ധതി - http://nrega.nic.in/ ) is fully
compatible with GNU/Linux.
The website does't give such details.
Query arose when, I searched for a muster roll in its search option,
which did not give result when I tried on Debian with iceweasel. The
training for MNREGA staff were done at district and block levels on
Windows, and they are doing their data entry works (in regional
language also) on Windows 7.
NREGA programme is going on, not only in the village panchayats of
Kerala, but all over India. Atleast one computer is needed for data
entry, in each village panchayat, atleast each for Block panchayats
(or, office at intermediate level) and district levels. All are
getting trained on windows, and atleast (number of village panchayats
in India) + (number of intermediate offices in India) + (number
district level offices in India) sales for M$ Windows 7 with public
funds is guaranteed.
But the real problem is, the frequent attack of viruses (most often
transferred via usb pendrives). We are forced to buy an anti-virus
software, still the complete protection is not guaranteed. At the
village panchayat levels people have no much technical know-how, on
how to deal with these viruses. We are unable to research on the
behaviors and remedial measures of individual viruses / worms, because
we have no spare time to spend during our tight work schedule and
heavy work load in our office (By the way, I am working as Junior
Superintendent at Koorachundu Village panchayat, Kozhikode district).
Whenever we call for the technical support, they give assistance only
after 2 to 4 days. All our works lay pending when it happens such a
situation.
So, I was just thinking of would it be better, when we switch to
GNU/Linux? But, I don't know how to test whether a web based MIS is
fully compatible with a particular OS+browser combination. Apart from
manual checking, is there any method? When I asked about the
compatibility to the technical support e-mail addresses given in the
MIS, they didn't respond. I assume, as the MIS is a big national level
system, they may be too busy to deal with these silly problems.
If any one know, please help.
