Which version of thunderbird are you using?
If you need to make sure that you have an archive of all mail you get,
please use POP to fetch mails (This can be configured either manually in
server settings or create a new account and specify POP). Technically
the mails you send shouldn't vanish from 'Sent items' until you delete it.
If you really like to try other email clients, we have many free
software alternatives like evolution, Claws mail, Sea monkey, etc.
