I had been using gedit with the latex and other plugins for quite some time. However, I always found it more convenient to use the terminal for compilation since the plugin has some limitations, though it is certainly useful. One limitation is when I had to shift from LaTeX to Omega and sometimes had to use different ways of compilation, or to see the compilation output and debug the source. So, I always used to do the compilation in the terminal and still do so, only the terminal has to be in a separate window. Somehow, I am not able to get the terminal in the bottom pane. Another problem with the LaTeX plugin is that sometimes the LaTeX specific menus do not appear when you open a tex file. Of course, all these problems appear only when one wants to create Malayalam documents. Otherwise, emacs is the best editor for LaTeX. Of course. Texmaker or Gummi is there for those who find it difficult to handle emacs.
