If you have a 12.04 Live CD, then try running it. If the issue persists, then it could be a driver issue. Then the only workaround is to revert back to 11.10 If there are no issues in the above test, then it could be due to an obsolete video driver package conflicting with a later version. In that case try *apt-get autoremove*.
