I use Gnome 3 (3.6), you can go to Settings > Online Accounts and add your google calender to it, it will sync it and and everyday you can just click on the date and if there is some event associated with the date it will be shown. It also shows up pop up messages if the activity has some time associated with it. I think syncing the calender once will be enough, you need not be connected to the internet always. -- Anoop Jacob Thomas
