I had a universal sim dongle from huawei. I configured it in kubuntu and got it working. I had to use 'sudo modprobe usbserial vendor=<vendorid> product=<productid>" to have it listed in the mobile broadband category. After that, I went on to set up a new mobile broadband connection using the gui and the "installed GSM device".
