The problem was finally solved by HP. They replaced the wifi card free of
cost. They said they had received complaints about the device from others
too and that HP was replacing the wifi cards of all those who come with a
problem.

The replacement is a realtek card (RTL8723BE) that works out of the box
with my ubuntu setup (14.04 LTS).
Though bluetooth is still not working properly, but that is not a big issue
as it never worked with the older card either and I do not really need that
feature.
