Sure, these are good suggestions. But the first thing that made our
man reach the list was that he forgot the damned root password. And
only since he forgot the root password he found out that security was
lax. You can have BIOS passwords, you can have bootloader passwords
and then you can have an encrypted FS. But the point I'm trying to
make is that you CAN forget the root password or any other password,
like the BIOS or the boot-loader password. And when you forget with
all your protection - you can lock yourself out. I'd say unless you
have stuff that you don't mind losing rather than the other guy
getting his hands on it, like for example porn that you don't want you
mother to know about, doing additional stuff to protect your PC from
malicious physical access is an overkill.

There are workarounds for various things. The BIOS password can be
reset by removing the CMOS "keep-alive" cell. If you have a live CD,
then the system is pretty much yours. I don't know about an encrypted
FS.
