Did you install any activity? Try the pippy one apt-get install sugar-pippy-activity It is a completely new approach. Instead of file and directory and desktop, it is based on activities. For example there is calculate activity and it gives you a calculator with all kind of fucntions. The pippy activity teaches you python. It stores all your work automatically with the activity itself.
