the biggest hindrance to Tamil medium students is that they are afraid of people making fun of them for trying to learn english. Well, let me get my rant in too. When I first moved to Chennai, I was taken aback by the fact that _none_ of the bus stops have any signs in English! I mean, come on, you love your language and all, all power to you, but why trouble poor outsiders by not even writing the damn bus stop name in English?

I see the same problem with the traffic cops - they put up these huge boards with instructions on changed directions _only_ in Tamil! I'm all for native language lovin', but this is ridiculous.
