This message indicates that the phone has been put in "USB Disk" mode. You need to switch the phone to modem mode. This can be done from the phone's key pad. I don't know if the phone tools which come with GNU/Linux can perform the switching from software. Another method is not to connect with USB but with Bluetooth. In that you can use it as a Bluetooth modem.
