Also useful to see things in .doc word documents that the author may
not have intended that you see!

Suppose the author of the document has the common (and bad) habit of
using older letters as a template for new letters, by cutting out the
text and addressee and then replacing it with the new material. Since
MS Word keeps all the deleted stuff in the "undelete section" of the
file in case you want to restore it, this material can be viewed
using strings.

This actually happened to a friend of mine who got an offer letter in
.doc format. Since he was using one of our Debian desktops he asked
me how he could view the file. I told him to use strings (this was in
2000 or so before Abiword and OO). He not only saw the offer he had
got but also the other offers the same organisation had made to
others!

Try it on .doc files that you have lying around --- you may be
surprised!
