I am very satisfied with Slax for use in old p3.

 http://www.slax.org  based on slackware.

Works like a charm !

or use a Bebian basic installation ( Net install)  and build it up as
per your requirements. I have debian with xfce desktop working with
128 mb ram and 300 mb HD
