The HP laserjet 1018, 1020 printers etc do not work with the hplip
packages alone You need to use the foo2zjs drivers for them. Get them
from http://foo2zjs.rkkda.com/

The page itself has a good guide for installing it.

Then this will give you a good way to set it up using cups admin

(It assumes that you have already set up a cups user. I do not know about
ubuntu.
But I had to set it up by myself for arch using lppasswd -a <username>)


Then switch off the printer. And switch it back on and try!
