It's not like I worked at a ton of companies, but in ours, when we recruit, we specifically state in the employment contract that the company rescinds all rights on work that is not directly related to the client project and is meant to be open sourced. But I'm not sure if that's a practice widely adopted. We work with freelancers too, so I just wanted to make sure open source contributors felt comfortable and perfectly safe working for our company, at the same time protecting the clients' interests.
