I use Hardy on Acer Aspire 4520 (AMD 64 bit with GeForce 7000M).
For me its from Choosing-the-OS(have a dual boot) to Login = 20sec.
Am working on getting some tweaks to reduce the time from PowerOn to
Choosing-the-OS - i get some device faults initially which is purely due to
my hardware and hence am not including the time for this phase in my
boot-time.
Simple Two Steps:
1) $ sudo sysv-rc-conf
and then removed all those programs(press 'space' on the 'X's) from the boot
sequence which i _felt_ were garb.
Make a note of these. [Do note that some of the programs in here are
important, and dont squid around.]
2) Go to /etc/rc0.d and /etc/rc6.d rename the files(the one corresponding to
the above which have no 'X's) from K.... to k.
i.e, if a file is called K09apache2 , then rename(mv) it to k09apache2.
Basically, we dont want these files but neither can we remove them and
hence rename it to something _easily-recoverable_.
I now save 20-30secs by doing the above. Let me know if the above helped.
Note: the above have been done by reading some articles
online(this<http://nostarch.com/download/howlinuxworks_ch3.pdf>one is
good, google for more) and am sure that there is more to tweak than
this.
