I am in my Prefinal year at Meenakshi Sundararajan Engineering College. Recently, I obtained the permission to install free Oses in 3 systems in my Lab. I am planning to go ahead with a Fedora 10. in 2 systems and possibly OpenSolaris 08-11 on 1. (I also gave Lenny, Scientific Linux and CentOS a thought since they are rock solid. But I doubt if we need such a Rock Solid distro where kids might want the latest toys. Also Debian Squeeze is a choice which I have not ruled out yet.)
Given that 10 out of 10 (:P) machines are using more cycles battling viruses and trojans on the current Windows XP install, I feel that this will be a welcome break. Also, it will give some students of the current pre-final year to embrace a F/OSS final year project. I am planning on the current software configuration (The systems are P4 3.0 GHz machines with 512 mb RAM) - DE 1) XFCE (Mainly because I feel Gnome is too much for the 512mb RAM limit) with its allied apps like ristretto, xfce4 term, Thunar etc. - Development 2) Emacs,Gvim,Scite,Tea 3) gcc, g++, openjdk, python, perl, ruby, php and ghc 4) Django, Rails, Apache, Tomcat 5) GNU Octave 6) iverilog -Graphics 7) Avidemux 8) Gimp, Inkscape 9) smplayer -Shells 10) zsh and bash -Office 11) evince, xchm 12) OpenOffice.Org-3 -Networking 13) Firefox (De Facto :P) 14) XChat, irssi Are there any other applications that are recommended? Also, I am planning to include a README file on the Desktop with read only permissions outlining how they can mail root asking for software they need and tips. I sincerely hope that I can pass the spark to atleast 10 more and hence get a real F/OSS community like Jaya Engineering College has. (Kudos to them) Any suggestions? --- Ashok `ScriptDevil` Gautham _______________________________________________ To unsubscribe, email [email protected] with "unsubscribe <password> <address>" in the subject or body of the message. http://www.ae.iitm.ac.in/mailman/listinfo/ilugc
