Did you do anything different each time? I have a method which you may find useful. Whenever, I start *anything* new I take a small notebook and a pencil and write down each step so that I will know each thing which I tried and when it worked and when it failed. What does "hang" mean? Does the keyboard not give any sign of working? When you press CapsLock or NumLock key do the relevant lights go on/off on the keyboard/computer? Does the mouse not give any sign of moving the pointer on the screen? Have you tried Ctrl-Alt-F1 to switch to the text console?
