It's almost true that most of the seminar/workshop programs is being done only in engg. colleges. Last week monday, I went to a Arts and Science college near Arcot to meet the CS HOD (who is also my well wisher). He requested me to give a talk about FOSS and its importance to their PG students (M.C.A, M.Sc. IT). When I expressed my willingness, within less than 10 minutes he gathered around 50-55 students and informed about the activities of me and company and after that, I gave a talk about one hour in the class room and also showed some demonstration on FOSS tools to students and staffs. Finally, HOD introduced me to the principal and the principal was inspired to know about the benefits of FOSS and questioned HOD, when everything is available freely, then why they are purchasing proprietary softwares and also assured to use FOSS tools from the next academic year. The sys. admin of the college installed codeblocks with GCC for windows (replacing Turbo-C) and MySQL for windows in few machines, when I was there. So, as Mr. Raman says, more importance has to be given for Science colleges and Polytechnics. Many of my programs were also in Arts, Science colleges and Polytechnics (and especially in many rural areas). http://linuxbaskar.googlepages.com >c.Each member does something in his sphere of influence. For doing a single day program for just 6 hrs in Ramnad, our ILUGC member Mr Ravi Jaya travel about nearly 1000 km from Bangalore to Ramnad and back. (Thanks Ravi) I am sure that, FOSS has reached many colleges here than any other state in INDIA. >e.We should identiy, motivate (if needed support financially) > talented students like sudharshan, sivaj, selva etc, so that > India contributes to FOSS, instead of just a consumer. All our programs were not just showcases about FOSS, but also to identify, motivate young talented students to contribute to FOSS. >f.Schools require some attention from us. If you could arrange something in your college, we can assure that your college will also be in FOSS colleges list next year. S.
