I connected my headphone and microphone onto my laptop's 3.5 jacks. I
tried to record something. But nothing worked. So i removed it. Since
then, Whenever I try to play any music or video file, the speakers
give out static (which sounds like an Uzi M/C Gun). The music keeps
paying. But static accompanies it. This is the case with all players
from Rythmbox to VLC and mplayer.

But the test sounds played in System->Preferences->Sound is proper.
There is no static. If the driver was corrupt, then static should have
accompanied the test sounds in the sound preferences right? Any idea
what the error could be?

A list hardware command with multimedia as the class gave me the following.

$ lshw -C multimedia

*-multimedia
       description: Audio device
product: 82801I (ICH9 Family) HD Audio Controller
       vendor: Intel Corporation
       physical id: 1b
       bus info: p...@0000:00:1b.0
       version: 03
       width: 64 bits
       clock: 33MHz
capabilities: pm msi pciexpress bus_master cap_list
       configuration: driver=HDA Intel latency=0 module=snd_hda_intel

And an aplay -l gave me the following

**** List of PLAYBACK Hardware Devices ****
card 0: Intel [HDA Intel], device 0: ALC268 Analog [ALC268 Analog]
  Subdevices: 0/1
  Subdevice #0: subdevice #0

Anything i can do to rectify it?
