Hi,

If your motherboard has on-board Intel 845 graphics, you should refer
launchpad bug #285250
<https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xserver-xorg-video-intel/+bug/285250>.
 There is no way you can get a hardware accelerated desktop on newer versions 
of X.org. You should just use Ubuntu 8.04 if you want direct rendering.

There are workarounds available in the comments on that bug.
