This is the solution I am currently using.

xconf? Did you mean xorg.conf? I can set the xserver to switch off the
screen after a certain amount of time, but to be effective in this case
it has to be a small value and to not be annoying it has to be a large
value (because I often watch DVDs on my laptop). Is there something else
that's possible that I'm missing?
