Step 1. Create a customisation that you like on your own desktop (or
if you know how, then do it in a virtual machine). There are standard
configuration programs in the "Preferences" and "Administration"
menus to do this. Take detailed notes.

Step 2. Create a custom CD. You will need the detailed notes you made
above. This is for people who want to create a Custom Live CD _after_
they are already through with Step 1. The instructions are on the
Ubuntu wiki.

Step 3. Be prepared to maintain your customised Ubuntu. There is no
point in creating a distribution without the support.

I would personally stop with Step 1 and leave 2 and 3 to others.

P. S. Step 0. Use your system for some work. This will give you some
idea about what customisations are needed for your work.
