i have tried the xorg file but not solved 
pls guide me
i am using gdm

man xrandr
man xorg.conf
I haven't tried the new Ubuntu but
dpkg reconfigure xserver-xorg
should take you through the wizard to configure xorg.
Also, if you're using KDE, it has a nice tool called krandr which is a
GUI tool to allow you to adjust the resolution.
