Another remark which I recalled as I hit the 'y' key to send this message is as follows. I have often found it useful to learn a language by reading programs written in the language. If these programs make sense (after staring at them for a while) _without_ the need to refer to a language definition text, then I am usually certain that I will like (and understand!) the language. If I can tweak the programs to do slightly different things then that is even better! "We always learn to read before we learn to write!"
