You might want to check out the /etc/fstab file and see what options are set
for your external media mount point (/media or /usbdisk etc.)? It might have
specified ro as one of the options.

Also check the access permissions of that mount point of whether read only
permission alone is there for that mount point.

When you said remounting, did you try to specifically give rw in the options
for mount? If not, you can try this to set explicitly.
