Face detection/recognition is one of the TOUGHEST problems in AI/Image Proc.
There is no ONE core solution for this.

A 2d recognition is of no use either, as pictures can be used. I remember
seeing some folks at JPL(Jet Propolsion Labs, NASA) do some work using a 3d
camera(depth perception) which did perform well. But this when i was working
on my algorithm for face recognition as my final year thesis (around
2003-04). It took me almost 2.5 years to present my algo , which worked well
only in a face image db. I can share some gyaan if someone is interested
(from whatever i remember, but no one asks Qs :P )
