"support position" does not need to mean a position somehow inferior to the position of a developer in terms of challenge of the compensation. Support professional does not automatically mean some one doing a low end work. Particularly in the area of enterprise technical support, it is not uncommon to find support professionals who have as intimate knowledge of a product as the core developers do. I have had the opportunity to work with quite a few such people. But I agree that the relative lack of awareness about the nature of Technical Support industry in India results in many people not benefiting from the opportunities in this industry. I have seen 2-way movement between support and areas like professional services, quality assurance and development and of course more managerially inclined people move into management. But of course, technical support jobs come in all shapes and colors just as developer jobs do and one has to choose the employer right.
Also with commoditization of most software products, more money would come from services around the product, rather than from the development of the product and technical support is one such key service. Though I am not allowed to talk in great detail about the positions that I posted about, I can say that some of the very promising Open Source cloud computing related software would be the focus here.
