I fully agree that a lot of discussion on this list is pretty much useless. Now the latest thing going around on ilugc is this - people have taken it upon themselves to teach job posters how to post job offers. It is not sufficient that they put [job] or whatever in the subject, but now they must also word their posts very carefully, recite the correct incantation in the right order and so on.
But as far as lively debates go, I think that is fine. That is one of the reasons people view a mailing list in anycase. It adds some drama to an otherwise staid list.
