the doc is in the making - and we live to share. Our thinking is like this: the vast majority of programmers produced by universities and institutes here are unemployable. Of course the mainstream industry in India which does outsourcing and does not produce software does not require programmers, they only need people who can produce code. But there is a growing segment of industry that *does* require something more. We are interested in certifying this competence. We are also backed by Annna University and the DIT in doing this certification. A person may pass a skills test with flying colours and may know the difference between an algorithm and an alligator, but may not be competent to enter the real world of producing software. We are leaning towards the idea of giving the examinee a code base in the language he is taking the certification in and requiring him to grok the code base and develop it further in specific ways. If he can, he passes, if not, he fails. The trick here is that the people who develop the certification should be experts in the language in question and should also have experience in making significant contribution to some FOSS product in the said language. And as with all our certifications the exam will be open book with access to the internet.
