You can use SCIM in KDE for tamil input. Unfortunately, the key board
layouts are not usable.

I use
a. tamil-gtk2im in gedit (need to install gnome).
b. tamilkey in firefox (https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/2994)
