FOSS Achievement:
1. First thing was FOSS awareness campaign for Faculty Members- Done with help
from NRCFOSS in 2008.
Why Awareness is the need of the hour?
a. One faculty scolded me for installing Fedora 5 in FOSS Lab since I removed
Redhat EL v4.0 and her lex program was not working. Like me she has graduated
from Regional Engg. College but she doesnt knows the relation between Redhat
and Fedora. Actually
flex was there)
b. HP LaserJet 1018 doesnt work in linux- View of System Admin & one Professor.
(Our FOSS team proved them wrong)
2. Installing Fedora 10 in all systems in FOSS Lab in our College.
(I have visited all colleges in Zone 2 of Anna University Affiliated colleges.
They use windows system, telnet to Linux based Server for Operating System and
Networks Lab. I have given each student a Linux machine and also shared root
password and have given freedom to explore for good. Since all the linux
machines are NIS configured, during lab examination they are connected to the
Linux Server which happens to be my desktop machine)
3. Developed a small shell script to alleviate the problems of Lab Assistant.
(We have 980 1st year students and they have Linux based Lab. Our poor lab
assitant typed 980 times login name and supplied 980 times with different
passwords. This prompted me to
write a 6 line shell script to solve the problem).
3. Installed all systems in Interent Lab with Fedora 10.
(Always our lab assistants had to format the systems due to virus affecting it
since windows xp was installed in the Internet Lab before. Now lab assistant
are happy enough with linux)
4. Adopted FOSS as an Elective subject for B.E(CSE) students last year. This
year also our HOD has approved it for the coming semester.
Real FOSS Achievement according to me will be when my student community
develop software which would be accepted by Fedora/Debian community.
