Thanks Bharati,

This is a virtual machine, and the issue was actually a very simple thing.
When I upgraded the kernel, the remaining little space in my / (root) became
full and since I had not created separate partition for tmp, gdm was unable
to write to it. And samba also became iunaccessible due to this.

When I deleted the kernel bz2 package, it freed some space and now both are
working.
