May be
$ mplayer --verbose<videofile> | tee -a mplayer-hang.log
and pasting the log here will be useful.
Also you might want to experiment with a different video output driver:
$ mplayer -vo help
will list all available drivers.
(for instance, you might have problems when you are using the xv driver when
your X driver supports acceleration and GL is enabled -- in which case it is
better to use the gl/gl2 mplayer video output drivers).
