Hi , I had a similar problem. My laptop had the broadcomm chipset. I did "sudo apt-get install bcm43xx-fwcutter" in ubuntu 9.10 , me not sure about the nuances of wireless, but to my surprise my laptop worked charmingly well after the installation.
