I Use EVDO on ubuntu and it works "on the fly". No additional configuration required. The Network Manager automatically detects it. Otherwise, there is program called "wvdial" which automatically configures the modem, all you have to do is enter your username and password. The only drawback is you may not get a good as a GUI as you do if you install your drivers in Windows where you can check Max Speed.
