Yes, we probably should. But we wanted to reach out to a large audience of
students who have no clue about security. The next time around though, it
would be changed maybe to "Security contest" or "Challenge in Application
layer Security" or so.
Please don't.

I think "hacking contest" is just fine as it accurately describes the nature of the capture the flag contest. "Challenges in Application Layer Security" is just sugar coated catch all corporate talk. The capture the flag contests are about tools and techniques.

There is really nothing wrong with a hacker contest or a hacking convention. In fact, it is common usage worldwide.

Some examples : The famous Defcon calls itself a hacking convention. The Black Hat Convention (Black hat = evil doer) is what every guy in the security industry dies to go to. If you want to be in the security industry you cant be turned off or sugar coat "bad stuff" - that is your bread and butter.
