I am guessing that you went through a fresh install. You should be keeping all your user data in a separate partition and mount /home on it; to avoid losing your user data. > I have done the same many times in the past - and always had a clean > restore. Sounds like a bug in Evolution - if you have done this before successfully. Anyway, you can always unpack the tar file to the location $HOME/.evolution.
