I am guessing that you went through a fresh install.   You should be
keeping all your user data in a separate partition  and mount /home on
it; to avoid losing your user data.

Sounds like a bug in Evolution - if you have done this before successfully.

Anyway, you can always unpack the tar file to the location
$HOME/.evolution.  This used to be the Evolution folder 4-5 years ago
when I used it.
