Hi, I wonder which releases do LUG members recommend with following four > features > 1) User has good enough experience with system(most work is done from > command line) the only reason to start X server for me is to run > Firefox and pidgin >
I personally prefer Slackware Linux for its simplicity and ease of use for the power user. I would also recommend you to try out Zenwalk, Arch Linux and Vector Linux. All of these distributions boot fast and are very lean on resources. Regarding stability, I found Slackware to be very stable and highly customizable while being light-weight and fast. > 2) Plain interface similar to XFCE but does not crash > 3) Is not memory hog (like KDE 4) > You might want to look into the following Window managers: - IceWM (Very fast, light weight and stable) - Enlightenment DR16 (Robust, feature-rich and yet light weight) - Window Maker (Light weight, fast and stable) - OpenBox (Stable and fairly light weight). Of course, for a good terminal - I recommend using RXVT-Unicode with GNU Screen.
