The first step to optimize anything is to understand the bottlenecks. Have you done any analysis to figure out the bottlenecks? Some things to look at: * What is causing the db to slow? DB writes or reads? * Enable slow query logging and check those queries. * Have you created proper indexes? * Can data be cached - See a related post on memcached.
